HHC Heart and Vascular Institute Earns Top Ratings in Cardiac Surgery
January 09, 2025
Hartford HealthCare’s cardiac surgery programs at Hartford Hospital and St. Vincent’s Medical Center have been recognized among the best in the nation in the latest Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) performance report.
Hartford Hospital has earned the elite distinction of a perfect 3-Star rating in all six major categories evaluated by the STS—the highest possible rating and a benchmark achieved by only the top 1% of cardiac surgery programs nationwide.
The STS star rating system, the gold standard for measuring cardiac surgical quality across the United States and Canada, bases its ratings solely on current performance data, not reputation or history. Achieving 3 stars indicates statistically superior outcomes in risk-adjusted mortality and morbidity compared to national averages.
Hartford Hospital’s ratings included three stars in:
- CABG Overall
- AVR Overall
- AVR + CABG Overal
- MVRR Overall
- MVRR + CABG Overall
- Multiprocedural Overall
Hartford HealthCare’s St. Vincent’s Medical Center also received the highest possible 3-Star rating from the STS in the Multiprocedural Overall category. This prestigious honor places St. Vincent’s among the nation’s most distinguished cardiac surgery programs.
The 3-star rating reflects statistically superior performance in patient care and outcomes, including lower mortality rates, fewer major complications, and exceptional post-operative recovery. It represents a holistic measure of program strength and excellence across even the most challenging surgical cases.
