Ayer Neuroscience Institute Neurovascular Program

Our state-of-the-art service excels at providing world-class care for the full spectrum of neurovascular disorders which affect the blood flow in the brain and spinal cord.

Our collaborative, multidisciplinary team includes open and endovascular neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists, stroke neurologists, neuro-intensivists and specialized physician assistants and nurses. We take pride in creating tailored treatment plans for each patient based on their condition, harnessing the power of evolving medical therapies, innovative neurointerventional procedures and time-tested traditional open neurosurgical techniques.

Conditions We Treat

There are many different types of neurovascular conditions. Some we treat include:

  • Brain and spine tumors
  • Intracranial atherosclerotic disease
  • Venous sinus stenosis
  • Pulsatile tinnitus
  • Idiopathic intracranial hypertension
  • CSF-venous fistulae
  • Cavernous malformations

Screening & Diagnosis

We have advanced diagnostic imaging technology that can help us diagnose various neurovascular conditions. The most versatile is the cerebral angiogram, which provides detailed images of the blood vessels in the brain.

For this outpatient procedure, we insert a catheter into a large blood vessel in your thigh or wrist. The catheter is guided through blood vessels in your neck to look at those in your head. We use contrast dye so we can see the blood vessels and look for abnormalities.

Treatment

While some patients require surgery, many can be monitored carefully for years with imaging and regular follow up.

Surgery can be complex because there are many blood vessels, nerves and other structures in the area. Historically, surgeons used an open technique when operating, and some patients still need this type of approach. But, our surgical team also has extensive experience in the latest minimally invasive techniques that are less risky and patients recover more quickly. Some treatment options we might recommend include:

  • Tumor embolization
  • Endovascular aneurysm treatment
  • MMA embolization
  • Carotid artery stenting
  • Carotid endarterectomy
  • Venous sinus stenting
  • Petrosal sinus sampling
  • Digital subtraction myelography
  • Craniotomy
